HAZARD, KY– by CRIS RITCHIE - Though initially ruled ineligible by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association last month, an appeal is underway to determine if standout Jaysean Paige can play basketball for Perry Central High School during the upcoming season.

As a junior at Jamestown High School in New York, Paige averaged 26 points per game as he led the Red Raiders to the state AA semifinals. He was later named player of the year by multiple sports publications.

Paige transferred to Perry County Central High School in Hazard earlier this year.

An informational hearing on Paige’s eligibility was held on Tuesday, though a final decision could be several days away, explained Angela Passafiume with the KHSAA.

An appeal hearing would be one “for informational purposes for the judge to hear all the information,” Passafiume said. “He takes that back and makes a ruling.”

Details of what information is being evaluated have been scarce, however. Eldon May, sports information director with the KHSAA, declined to comment on the case in October, citing a student’s right to appeal the initial decision. He could not be reached Wednesday afternoon.

John C. Combs, chairman of the Perry County Board of Education, told the Herald that he was informed the case is still under review, and it could be 8 to 10 days before a final determination is issued.
