Sunny and 60 at East Syracuse Minoa High School for a football game less than a week before Thanksgiving? There was about as good of a chance of that happening as there was having the Southwestern Trojans make it to the state championship game next week at the Carrier Dome at Syracuse University.
Well guess what!!! The Trojans are headed back to Syracuse next weekend for the NYSPHSAA Class C Championship game!! And it did just hit 60 degrees yesterday at East Syracuse Minoa High School. Southwestern knocked off Waverly 19-13 to punch their ticket to "the dome". This will be Southwestern's third trip to the Championship game in the past 4 years.
The big key in the victory for the Trojans was the fact that Waverly turned the ball over 6 times. The final was an interception by Jake Swan with just over a minute remaining in the game. Peter Trathen led the way as he tallied up 9 tackles and a sack. For the second week in a row, Trathen was named "Outstanding Defensive Player" of the game. Jake Snow and Kevin Bellardo each had a pair of fumble recoveries while Chuck Leonard added another. Ryan Schutte and Dan Austin combined for twelve tackles.
Offensively, it was junior quarterback Jake Pilling that led the way as he threw a pair of touchdown passes, a 36 yarder to Jake Swan and an 11 yard pass to Andy Greenlee as he amassed 119 yards through the air while completing 9 of 13 passes. Swan finished the game with 3 receptions for 60 yards. Pilling was named "Outstanding Offensive Player" by NYSPHSAA.
Sophmore sensation kicker, Tanner Hoose, kicked a pair of field goals(32, 25) again that turned out to be the difference in the game.
Southwestern will now play Dobbs Ferry for the Class C Championship set to be held 12pm Sunday at the Carrier Dome.
