The stage was set at Ralph Wilson Stadium Thursday night for two of the top Class D teams in New York State. The Frewsburg Bears versus the Maple Grove Red Dragons to see who would take home the Section 6 Class D trophy. The fireworks started early as Frewsburg broke the opening play for a long touchdown and the big plays and exciting plays continued throughout the game, but it was the Red Dragons who prevailed in the end to win the game 34-26.
Alex Grace put up "video game" numbers and he threw for 4 touchdowns and 250+ yards to lead the aerial attack of the Red Dragons. Grace completed 67% of his passes as he was 16 of 24 on the night. Grace completed 2 touchdown passes (46, 42) to Skyler Liddell one each to Dalton Bolles and Oliver Simpson. Liddell finished the night with 112 yards receiving on 8 catches, Simpson had 57 yards receiving. On the rushing side, Simpson and John Nickerson combined for 97 yards.
Frewsburg was led by Thad Johnson who gained 138 yards on the ground, scored a pair of touchdowns and threw for 76 yards. The Bears' quarterback Preston Wiltsie was 7 for 11 on the night while throwing for 198 yards and and a pair of touchdowns. Dalton Peterson had one of those touchdown receptions on his way to racking up 127 yards receiving on 5 catches. Devone Adelgren had the other touchdown reception for 76 yards.
Turnovers were a big part of the game as Frewsburg turned the ball over 4 times. While are were critical, the biggest came after a long completion by Frewsburg when Liddell came up behind the Bears reciver and clubbed the ball out as Jeff Tampe fell on it before sliding out of bounds.
The kicking game was a huge part of the game as Maple Grove's kicker Justin Pembridge kicked a pair of field goals (18, 26) and successfully booted 4 of 4 extra points. Pembridge also recovered a fumble during a kickoff.
Maple Grove will no play at Sahlen Stadium in Rochester for the the Far West Championship which is the winner of the Section 5 and Section 6 champions. The game will be next Friday night.VIEW PHOTO GALLERY
