2012 Southern Tier Brewers 11U All-Star Team Tryouts Set

Preliminary tryouts for the 2012 Southern Tier Brewers 11U All-Star team will be held Sunday, November 13, 2011. The 2012 season will begin moderately in December of 2011 and run through July of 2012. The season will be highlighted by a tournament the first week in July of 2012 at the Cal Ripken Experience in Aberdeen, MD. In order to try out for the team, players must be 11 years old or younger on April 30, 2012 and reside in Chautauqua County.

Jamestown Gets "No-Hit" In World Series

Jamestown opened up the 2011 15U World Series by facing Sarasota, FL. Sarasota came out on top 7-0 while holding the host team without a hit. This was the 18th time in World Series history that a no hitter has been tossed. Adam Westley pitched 4 solid innings for Jamestown after getting off to a rocky start in the first allowing 5 runs on 4 hits. Jamestown will now play again Sunday night at 7:30pm.

Tackling The Issue of Playing Up

I often get asked whether I believe in letting younger players play up. By “playing up” I mean allowing kids to play in an age group older than where they’re supposed to play. There really is no one answer to suit everybody. Kids develop mentally and physically at different rates, so each case must be looked at on an individual basis.

If kids possess the skill sets and are mentally capable of playing with older players, in most cases I would not have a problem with playing them up. When my son Ryan was moving up through the youth baseball ranks, he played up on several of his teams, which means he was usually the youngest on his team. He’s always been big for his age and back then his skill level fit in well with the older kids he was playing with, so the experience was a good one for him....

Golden Falcons are Working Hard

Coached by Chris Schrader, The Falconer Central Basketball team is ready for the season. Although the team has a non-league record of 1-2, they are working hard to turn that around and are looking forward to a winning season. After going 1-1 with Clymer, the Golden Falcons took a hard hit from the north end of the county by powerhouse Dunkirk.

Thunderbirds Edge Bulldogs

The Chautauqua Lake Thunderbirds boys basketball team avenged an earlier season defeat by turning the tables on the Brocton Bulldogs by a score of 49-47. The game was close throughout. Sophomore Ian Clute led the Thunderbirds with 25 points and 5 rebounds. Dan Gleason added 17 points and 4 rebounds. Jason McMahon added 8 rebounds and 6 assists and 3 steals. Brocton was led by Kyle Schrantz and Jordan Patterson with 13 points each and Dan Ferguson added 11. Patterson hit an amazing full court shot at the buzzer to bring the Bulldogs within 2.

Frewsburg defeated Sherman 46-43 to advance to the Westfield Winter Classic Championship game Saturday where they will face Westfield. Westfield defeated Falconer 77-74 to reach the Championship game.

Despite a late comeback by the Falconer Golden Falcons, they still came up 3 points short agains the hosting Westfield Wolverines. Falconer was led by Ryan Nord who scored 28 points. Brandon DiPietro added 14 points for Falconer while he dominated on the boards, hauling in 22 rebounds.

For Frewsburg, Gage Bird was led by Alex Elderkin and Gage Bird who combined for 23 points.

Falconer will take on Sherman at 5:30pm while Frewsburg will take on Westfield at 7:30pm for the Championship.

Dunkirk Marauders 2011 JAMFL Varsity Champions!

At snowy Strider Field, the Dunkirk Varsity Midgets capped their perfect season with their second 2011 defeat of Fredonia to capture the 2011 Championship Trophy!

Chris Williams Jr ran up over 215 yards in rushing and was aided by a defense led by Evon Hernandez, Jason Marin, Tywan Wright, Jaziah Rivera and Austin Polowy-Collins......

JAMFL: Fredonia Wins Junior Varsity Championship

The Fredonia JV Hillbillies defeated the Southside Blue Devils in the Junior Varsity division at Strider Field Saturday afternoon to win the 2011 JAMFL JV Championship.

Fredonia modified finished their playoff run with a win over the Northside Warriors to win the JAMFL Championship. Leading the Northside offense were Tommy Wofford with two touchdowns and Zack Kinsey with two touchdowns.
